Skincare is an important aspect of personal hygiene and care and is a fun hobby that many teenagers have recently taken up to take care of their rapidly changing skin types. Developing good habits now can prevent sun damage and keep your skin happy and healthy as you age, so it’s important to get the low-down on what your skin needs to succeed. However, according to CNN Business the skincare industry was valued at over 135 billion US dollars in 2018. Companies market dozens of products your skin may not need and may perpetuate misinformation in hopes of you cashing in your change for a bottle. Debunking these myths will help to clear up common misconceptions about skincare and keep your skin protected.
You don’t need to wear sunscreen when you’re inside.
This is false! There are two types of UV rays that can damage your skin. UVA rays and UVB rays are both present outside, which is why you should apply sunscreen to avoid sunburn and damage. Inside, the glass windows filter out UVB rays. Despite this, UVA rays can pass through the glass and harm your skin. This is why you should protect all of your skin with an SPF of 30 or higher to avoid damage.
2. Anti-aging creams are scientifically proven to be effective.
This is false, too. A majority of anti-aging creams market collagen---a protein that keeps skin taut and plump that we lose as we age---in the formula. However, collagen cannot be absorbed through the skin, so these products will, at best, hydrate and protect your skin using other ingredients. While aging is not a bad thing, taking good care of your skin can minimize the effects of sun damage associated with age.
3. You need dozens of products to target every skin concern.
This isn’t correct. While having a shelf full of shiny products may seem enticing, it can overwhelm your skin if you combine too many. A complicated routine can be less effective than a simple routine that you’re consistent with. Experts agree that a cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF in the morning is a great routine, combined with a cleanser, any specialized treatment or serum, and moisturizer in the evening. Tailoring it to your needs and sticking with products to allow them to work is helpful when building a routine.
4. Stretch marks are preventable.
This isn’t true. A vast majority of people have stretch marks, due to genetics. No special cream or oil will prevent them, and any erasure of existing marks is minimal and varies from person to person. Instead of trying to prevent them, invest time in loving and appreciating your body and skin.
5. You don’t need to reapply sunscreen after the initial application.
This isn’t right! For sunscreen to work it needs to be reapplied every two hours regardless of the SPF value. To make sure that your skin is protected, keep sunscreen with you so that you stay topped up all day.
These skin care myths are common, but it is possible to avoid misinformation and take care of your skin. Talk to a dermatologist if you have any questions about your skin so they can help you reach your goals and target any issues.
Excessive sweating can have a severe impact on our confidence and our quality of life. Botox is a NICE and FDA approved treatment for hyperhidrosis of the hands, feet, underarms, head and face amongst other discrete areas. Clinical studies consistently demonstrate the highest success rates of cure and/or relief. If you are finding that antiperspirants and deodorants are not working for you and you wish to avoid strong, time consuming chemical formulations such as aluminium hydroxide preparations and expensive treatments such as ionophoresis, then this is the treatment for you.
